When you post a tweet, share an article, or otherwise add content to Twitter, you have the opportunity to reach people who don’t already follow you.
Every time you do this, some portion of your audience will retweet or like your tweet and send it out into their own followers’ feeds.
If these people are actively engaged with Twitter, they’ll probably be on the lookout for new people to follow, and that could mean they’ll follow you!
By sharing high-quality content from other sources, this is how every user has the potential to expand their network.
The trick involves aligning your interests with those of other users. You can start by looking at who retweets and likes your tweets and see what kind of content they tend to share.
If someone’s retweeting all of your tweets about food trucks, for example, then chances are he’s interested in food trucks and follows other accounts that tweet about them too.
So if you want more followers who like food trucks (or whatever happens to interest you), try finding more great content about food trucks and posting it so that those existing followers will notice it too.

#1. Make sure your bio is complete and does a good job of showing why people should follow you
There are a few different ways you can use the link in your bio. Some of my favorites include:
- Link to your site
- Link to your latest blog post
- Link to a free resource like a checklist or swipe file
- Link to a webinar sign-up page
- Link to an opt-in for an email list that leads people through emails towards making them eventually buy something from you.
#2. Find the most influential users in your niche and make friends with them
- The easiest way to find influencers is through Twitter Analytics.
- Make sure you have a bio that gets people interested in you. You want them to trust you, so you need to tell people about yourself.
- Use hashtags in your tweets and make sure they’re relevant to what you’re posting about.
- Don’t just follow influencers; interact with them! Retweet their posts, reply to their tweets, etc. This will get you noticed by other users as well as show that you’re interested in learning more about their topics of interest.
- Be careful not to overdo it though. You don’t want your account suspended for spamming someone else’s timeline with replies or retweets all day long. Remember: quality over quantity always wins out when it comes to social media engagement (and relationships)!
Follow back with others active users
A good way to get new followers is to follow back users who are active on Twitter. If you’re someone with a small following, there’s a good chance that some of your smaller followers don’t have many followers themselves.
So if you can spot these active users and follow them, they will most likely be excited to see that you followed them and will hopefully follow you back.
This process can be difficult though, however, because it means that you need to use the site regularly (and not just tweet) in order to spot these active users.
One great tip is to make sure that every time you visit Twitter, take a look at the people who are tweeting and reply or retweet their tweets. This is great for two reasons:
- It shows the person that you care about what they tweeted (or said), which may entice them to learn more about your social media profile or blog/website page.
- It helps drive traffic back into your own tweets from other people’s pages when they click on your name from their notification tab.

Tweet regularly and retweet often
If you want to build an audience on Twitter, you’re going to have to tweet. A lot. At least once a day, and preferably more often. And that’s just the beginning.
You also need to retweet your own tweets a few times a day (to reach different audiences), and retweet other peoples’ tweets as well.
But don’t just retweet! Be sure to add value with a comment of your own when you do so, and don’t forget the @mention of their Twitter handle so they see it!
Finally, make sure to vary the types of content in your feed, a mix of your own original tweets and retweets from others will keep things interesting for everyone else on Twitter.
Engage in conversations
If you engage with the right audience, they’ll engage back. The quickest way to do this is by replying to other people’s tweets and mentioning them in your own.
Keep your replies conversational, but also keep it short and sweet—remember that only 140 characters are allowed.
Another great way to get noticed is retweeting (simply hit the RT button). Chances are that person will notice you when they look at their notifications, and they might even follow you or retweet your tweet!

You might be wondering how you can make your content more discoverable if people aren’t following you yet. A great way to do this is by using industry-related hashtags.
Let’s say you’re an editor at a pet magazine, and you’re writing about the upcoming cat show in your city.
By using the hashtag #catshow and #catsofInstagram, you’ll be able to get your tweet in front of anyone who is interested in seeing tweets from that tag. If they like what they see, there’s a good chance they’ll click on your profile to see what else you have to say.
#6 Use a Twitter management tool.
If you’re serious about growing your Twitter audience, it’s important to automate the process of tweeting.
You can manually tweet every hour throughout the day, but chances are it’d be easier if you automated the process with a tool that schedules tweets based on a calendar.
Some tools I recommend: Hootsuite, Buffer and Tweetdeck. There are many other options available that aren’t expensive or difficult to use in any way, so do some research and pick one that fits your style of working.
The benefits of scheduling tweets include simplifying the tweeting process and ensuring you remember to tweet at ideal times when your target audience is most likely to be online.
#7 Share the love.
It’s always nice to share the love. Remember when you were a kid at school and you would pass out Valentines? You’d give your besties the biggest candies, and give everyone else something, too. Retweeting is the digital equivalent of that.
Another reason to retweet is to show others that you care about them. Have you ever started a conversation with someone by saying “I saw what you said earlier”? That’s Twitter flirting at its finest!
In fact, retweeting can be a great way to meet new people on Twitter in general. If you’re active on social media and enjoy sharing interesting content, it’s likely that anyone who retweets or likes your stuff will want to follow you back!
#8 Have a personality
After all, one of the key reasons for having a Twitter account is to engage with people on a different level. The likelihood that someone will follow you increases when they already know your personality because it’s been displayed on your Twitter feed.
Engage people by posting interesting and relatable content, not just about you but about other things as well.
